Thomaston- Stephen “Soap” Shypinka, 89, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Wolcott Hall in Torrington. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” (Bouley) Shypinka.
Soap was born June 18, 1928 in Thomaston, son of the late Michael and Sadie (Podabylo) Shypinka. He was a lifelong resident of Thomaston, and a communicant of St. Thomas Church. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII and in the U.S. Army during Korean Conflict. He was an active member of the Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department, Crescent Hose Company No. 2 for 64 years, and served as past Captain and Drill Master. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 22, of 68 years; and a member of the Litchfield County Fire Chief’s Emergency Plan. Soap was also an avid Yankees, Giants, and UConn Women’s Basketball fan.
Soap is survived by his sons, David Shypinka; and Jay Shypinka; his daughters, Joyce Norton, and her husband, Robert Norton, Sr.; and Jamie Shypinka, and her husband, Ernest Petrovits; his grandchildren, Jennifer Halpin; Robert Norton, Jr.; Jessica Dziob; Kenneth J. Zajac, Jr.; Hillary Shypinka; and Jordan Shypinka; his great-grandson, Joshua Halpin; and several nieces and nephews.
Including his wife, Betty, Soap was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara “JoAnne” Shypinka; one brother; and four sisters.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 26 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street, Thomaston. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, Thomaston. Burial will Full Military Honors will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Soap’s name to the Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department, 245 South Main Street, Thomaston, CT 06787.
