Thomaston

Obituary

Thomaston—Mrs. Barbara H. (Callahan) Olivero, 87, of Thomaston, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family of three generations, on November 1, 2026, at Bristol Hospital.

Barbara was born on September 27, 1939, in Waterbury, the daughter of the late George Callahan Sr. and Mary (Shreiner) Callahan-Johnson. She was a lifelong resident of Thomaston, except for the last four years, when she resided at Cook Willow Health Center in Plymouth. Barbara was a graduate of Thomaston High School and a former vice president of the Thomaston Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Barbara loved spending time outdoors with her friends, taking walks, and being with her family. She especially enjoyed time with her grandchildren, their spouses, and, later in life, her great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed word-search puzzles and collecting Garfield characters before later collecting angels.

Barbara is survived by her two sons, Allan Olivero and his wife, Sandy, of Thomaston, and Thomas Olivero and his wife, Denise, of Torrington; and two daughters, Michele Giuffre and her husband, Jim, of Thomaston, and Lisa Terrier and her husband, Jim, of Thomaston.

She leaves behind the loves of her life: her grandchildren, Ashley DuPont and her husband, Mark, Heather Lamy and her husband, Chris, Jason DuPont and his wife, Nicki, Courtney Terrier-Scapin and her husband, Dominic, and Jordan Terrier and his wife, Jessica, Alicia Olivero, Brion Olivero, and wife Alison and her great-grandchildren, Zachary, Connor, Brooklyn, Hunter, Ryan, Madison, Brock, Cody and Mikayla. She also leaves two sisters, Gail Neri of Wallingford and Shirley Westover of Southington, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Barbara was predeceased by her granddaughter, Kaylee Olivero; her grandson, James R. Terrier Jr.; her sisters, Ruth Brague and Mary Ouellette; her brother, George Callahan Jr.; and, most recently, her sister-in-law, Sandra Callahan.

Barbara treasured visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was affectionately known as Gramma, Gram Cracker, and GG. In earlier years, she volunteered for the Muscular Dystrophy Boot Drives conducted by the fire department each year. She would arrive at the firehouse first thing in the morning to set up the room for counting donations and enjoyed every minute of it. She also participated in the annual Relay for Life walks in town in honor of her granddaughter Ashley, who successfully overcame cancer. Barbara enjoyed taking walks around town every day—sometimes twice a day.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Barbara’s healthcare providers, who became her good friends, especially Courtney and Selina, whom she loved dearly at Cook Willow Health Center in Plymouth. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Bristol Hospital, whose nurses and aides were outstanding. They made Barbara comfortable and attended to her every need throughout her four-day stay.

The family has entrusted Lyons Funeral Home with Barbara’s care and announces the following arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street, Thomaston. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston.
