Obituary

THOMASTON Clifford Andrew Knox, 78, of Old Northfield Rd., died Saturday, September 11, 2010 after a battle with cancer. Clifford was born in Waterbury on April 2, 1932, son of the late Winfred Knox and Nellie (Wright) Knox. Clifford spent his early years with many cousins in the Reynolds Bridge Road area. He and his sister Janet moved to Middlefield, NY to live with their grandparents, George and Lillian Knox. Upon returning to Thomaston, Clifford graduated from Thomaston High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Trieste, Italy. Clifford learned how to be a tin knocker during the construction of Heritage Village in Southbury. He was a self-taught carpenter. He also built two homes for himself, including the A-frame where he lived until his passing. Clifford had a wall of books which showed his appreciation of reading. He will be remembered as an honest and kind man, always helpful to his family and friends. Like most men of the Knox family, he could give help when needed but had a hard time accepting help for himself. He was one of the core people who helped organize the annual Knox family reunion and supported the Knox family memorial service. Clifford and Barbara enjoyed traveling. They visited Ireland and Scotland, where he had a kilt made from his clan tartan. The Knox family is a sect of the MacFarlene clan. He and Barbara also loved to spend time on Marthas Vineyard Island. Like many men of his generation, he did not know how to just sit and relax. He was a handyman and would rather be working on home improvement projects. He is survived by his companion of 30 years, Barbara H. Roberts, a sister, Janet Knox Kelley of Virginia, a half sister, Delean Knox Goldsmith of Torrington and several half-brothers and sisters. Also survived by nephews, Oliver Goldsmith and Daniel Kelley, nieces, Ailie Goldsmith Droun and Cindy Kelley and several cousins. A celebration of Cliffords life will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston on October 2nd at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston, where he will be laid to rest with his father. The family request, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army of the donors choice.
