Northfield- Mr. Clifford L. Schmidt, died November 9. He was the husband of Dolores (Lorrie) Schmidt.
Born on a farm in Mitchell County, Iowa on June 27, 1922, Mr. Schmidt was the son of Fred E. Schmidt and Flora (Nieland) Schmidt. He attended and graduated from the Mitchell Consolidated High School. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Political Science and Law and earned a M.A. degree from that university also. He completed a Sixth Year program in School Administration at the University of California in Los Angeles.
Mr. Schmidt enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940. He served throughout WWII. He was initially stationed at Pearl Harbor, later going to Midway. He participated as a fire control NCO in the battle of Midway in June of 1942. His unit was awarded a Navy Unit Citation for service in the battle. He left Midway to become an instructor in fire control at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he was chosen from the ranks to attend a two year officers training program. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946 at the Charleston navy yard.
Mr. Schmidt was a public school teacher and administrator in schools in Iowa, California and West Haven, Connecticut. He was an organizer and first president of the West Haven Administrators Association AFL-CIO. After retiring from the public schools he taught for two years at Mildin Technical Institute in New Haven.
Always active in community affairs, Mr. Schmidt served on the Board of Alderman in Milford, CT. After moving to Northfield he served on the Veterans Committee and the Water Pollution Control Authority. He was a member of the Northfield Volunteer Fire Company, a director and secretary of the Northfield Cemetery Improvement Society, for seven years president of the Village Improvement Society of Northfield and a member of the Northfield Historical Society. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member and chaplain of Post 27 of the American legion.
Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife of 65 years, a daughter, Ruth LaFrance of Tillamook, Oregon, a son, Arthur Schmidt of East Litchfield, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by his parents, six brothers and a sister.
