Obituary

Thomaston - Edward T. Grabherr, 73, died Thursday, October 22, unexpectedly at St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Marianne (Savage) Grabherr. Edward was born July 8, 1942 in Torrington, son of the late Eleanor (Miles) Grabherr and Theodore Grabherr. He was a long time resident of Thomaston and attended Thomaston High School He served in U.S Army from 1959-1962 in the Military Police and stationed in the Korea. In June 1968 he joined the Thomaston Police Dept. and was promoted to Sergeant in 1986. At the age of 49 and a 24 year veteran of the Thomaston Police Department, Sergeant Grabherr, the department's 2nd-in-command, was promoted to Chief in 1992. After serving as chief for 12 years and the Thomaston Police Dept. for 36 years, Chief Grabherr retired at the age of 61. In the years following he enjoyed golfing, traveling, supporting his Yankees, and landscaping his beautiful property. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching his sons Little League baseball teams. In February 1969, he graduated from the Connecticut Police Academy. He also completed a State Attorney's Law Enforcement Training Program, which served to attest to his devotion to continued education in law enforcement. In addition, he earned an Associates Degree in Law at Northwestern Connecticut Community College. In 1974, he successfully completed the Institute on Police Regulations with Troubled Juveniles. One of his proudest achievements was the development of Thomaston Police Explorers, which was organized to encourage youth involvement. In addition to his devoted wife, he is survived by his loving son's Michael Grabherr and wife Christie, and Brian Grabherr and wife Karen; his sister Linda Chandon and husband Richard; 5 cherished grandchildren Abby, Jackie, Samantha, Katie and Andrew, as well as several nieces and nephews. Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 26, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St, Thomaston. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, October 27, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Chief Grabherrs name to the Thomaston Police Explorers in care of Thomaston Police Department 158 Main St Thomaston, CT 06787
