Obituary

Thomaston Mrs. Genevieve Ann (Krotick) Kaniewski, 99, widow of Joseph Kaniewski, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023 with her children and daughter-in-law Laurie at her side. Genevieve was born in Thomaston on February 12, 1924, daughter of the late Adam and Feliksa (Ropelewski) Krotick. She lived her entire life in Thomaston, graduating from Thomaston High School. Working as a telephone operator, then supervisor, it was there she met her beloved husband, Joseph Kaniewski, who worked as a pharmacist a short walk away. He knew immediately that she was the woman he wanted to marry. They wed in 1950. Genevieves family was the center of her life and she was the heartbeat. She loved family picnics at Burr Pond, vacations at Point O Woods and Misquamicut. She was happiest when wrapped in the presence of family at her home bursting with laughter, children, and pets. She was always willing to join in the fun: making videos for her great-granddaughters, dressing up as a gangsta, or playing Jarts while legally blind. Devout Catholics, Genevieve and Joseph raised their children in the faith, a blessing that has kept her family close. She prayed the rosary daily, never failing, even at the age of 99, to go down on her knees at her bedside every evening to give thanks to God. "God has been good to me. Growing up people were good to me. So I want to do the same for others." This was her life; this is her legacy. She is survived by one son, John Kaniewski (Laurie), two daughters, Jean Beck and Ann Marie Gabrenas; three grandchildren, Adam Beck (Beth), Alicia Beck and Shane Breen (Miriam) as well as three great-grandchildren, Aurora, Charlotte and Ivy. She was predeceased by her brother, Felix Krotick, her son-in-law, Donald Gabrenas, and her son, Paul Kaniewski. A Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, March 11, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
