Obituary

Thomaston- Mr. H. Norman Westby, 88, died Tuesday, January 20 at Cook-Willow Convalescent Home in Plymouth. He was the husband of Dorothea (Wood) Westby. Mr. Westby was born August 6, 1920 in Havre, Montana, one of six children, son of the late Nels and Eva (Orn) Westby. He was a graduate of Jamestown High School and spent two years at the Jamestown Business College before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served in the Navy on a PT Boat in the Philippines and New Guinea. Following the war he then became the owner of the Wood and Westby Dairy from 1945 to 1971. On October 13, 1945 he married Dorothea Wood. After selling his dairy he became a letter carrier at the Terryville and Thomaston Post Offices. He always greeted his customers with a smile and was well liked by everyone who knew him as a milkman and postman. He was a member of the VFW and had served as District Commander in the 50s and 60s. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason and had been a member of the former Union Lodge # 96 AF & AM and a member of the Shriners. He will be remembered as a terrific father and loving husband. This past October he and his wife celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. He was an avid Red Sox fan and golfer. He had been a member of the Crestbrook Mens Golf Association. In addition to his wife of 63 years he is survived by two sons, Kie Westby of Southbury and Donald Westby of Thomaston; one daughter, Claudia Westby Duff of Westwood, MA; one sister, Nathlie Carlsted of St. Paul, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Tonya Westby, Candice Mingel, Kimberly Westby, Georgina Duff, Christina Duff, David Duff, Jr, Sarah Westby and Rachel Westby and two great grandchildren, Michael Martin and Derek Martin. Arrangements: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Congregational Church of Thomaston. Calling hours are Friday, January 23 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston. Private burial will be held in the spring.
