Watertown Istvan "Steve" Szabo, 87, formerly of Thomaston and Ocala, Florida, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025. He was the husband of the late Ingeborg (Neuhauser) Szabo, for 63 years.
Steve was born on March 30, 1937, in Koronco, Hungary, son of the late Istvan and Erzsebet (Preisinger) Szabo. He and Inge immigrated to the United States in 1959. He worked as a carbide tool & die maker for McCallum Die Company for many years and finished his career at ITW Highland after 25 years of service. Steve was an avid soccer fan, player, coach and referee. He also had a passion for golf and German music.
Steve leaves behind his son, Thomas Szabo and his wife Mary, of Wolcott; his daughter, Elizabeth "Lisa" Szabo, of Thomaston; his brothers, Imre Szabo; and Gabor Szabo, both of Hungary; his grandchildren, Lauren Frey and her husband Justin; Kevin Keiper; Kimberly Szabo; and Randi Szabo; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his beloved wife, Steve was predeceased by his brother, Sandor Szabo; and his sisters, Ilonka (Szabo) Bokor, and Marishka (Szabo) Baan.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Ivy of Watertown for the care provided for the past 2 years.
Charitable contributions can be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association. A service will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peters-Trinity Church, 160 Main Street, Thomaston.
