Thomaston- Mrs. Joan R. (Keefe) Viets, 79, died Wednesday, December 12, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. She was the wife of Roland D. Viets. Mrs. Viets was born August 18, 1933 in Waterbury daughter of the late Joseph S. and Roseann (Caouette) Keefe. Raised in Waterbury she attended local schools and was a graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School, attended St. Joseph College in West Hartford and was a graduate of Central Connecticut State Teachers College in New Britain. She had been a substitute teacher in the Thomaston Elementary Schools for 20 years. She also worked as a seamstress for most of her life. An avid square dancer for most her life, she met her future husband at a square dancing class at the Waterbury YMCA. Joan and Roland went onto to square dance for many years as members of Thomaston T-Squares and the Litchfield Square Dance Club. She was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. In addition to her husband of 57 years she is survived by three sons, Paul R. Viets of Enfield, Brian C. Viets and his wife Sharon of Harwinton and David M. Viets and his wife Debra of New Hartford; three daughters, Maureen A. Laplante and her husband John of Thomaston, Diane M. Viets of New London and Sarah E. Viets and her husband Michael Pizzoferrato of Burlington; one brother, Daniel Keefe of Litchfield; three sisters, Mary Lou Keefe of Middlebury, Alice Bertola of Beacon Falls and Sister Maureen Keefe, R.S.M. of Hartford; 12 grandchildren, Eric Laplante, Aimee Kerr, Tyler Kozaczuk, Amanda Viets, Kaylee Viets, Lindsey Viets, Carter Viets, Derek Viets, Julia and Maya Pizzoferrato and Lauren and Rachel Viets; one great grandson, Nathan Kozaczuk and one niece. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph R. Keefe. Arrangements: A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 15, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St., Thomaston.
