Obituary

Johannes Meschter Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Thomaston Mr. Johannes Meschter, 85, passed away on Thursday, August 13, at his home. He was the husband of the late Margareth (Weyerman) Meschter. He is survived by one son, Stephan J. Meschter and his wife Karen of Endicott, NY; two daughters, Christine Monica Ward and her husband Roddie of Great Falls, Montana and Michele Ann Fletcher and her husband Nate of Victor, Idaho, one brother, Werner Meschter of Germany, one sister, Monika Baum of Germany, three grandchildren, Andreas, Hollyanne and Tomas and four great-grandchildren, Gemma, Ivy, Andrew and Holly. Hans, as he was known to most, was born on August 29, 1934 in Chemnitz, Germany to the late Martin and Hildegarde (Schiller). In 1959, he and Margareth emigrated to the United States and settled in Bristol. The two married in 1960. They moved to Thomaston in 1964. He had been employed at Iseli Swiss Machine Screw in Terryville for many years and also at Risdon Company. Hans and Margareth owned and operated Hans and Fritz Delicatessen in Farmington for 12 years. He was a member of St. Thomas Church as well as a member of "Light Up Thomaston". Hans was proud of his heritage and showed this as being a member of H.S.V. Bavarian dance group. Hans will be remembered as an active ski instructor of over 50 years at Butternut Basin Ski School in Great Barrington, MA. Other hobbies included playing tennis, playing guitar, singing, windsurfing, enjoying the beach, camping and world travel. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 at St. Maximillian Kolbe Church (St. Thomas) 1 E. Main St. Thomaston, CT. at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private. A luncheon will be immediately following the funeral at The Sunset Grille 834 Northfield Rd. Watertown, CT.
