Thomaston- Mr. John Opalak, 76, died Wednesday, December 30, at Cook Willow Health Care in Plymouth after a long illness. He was the husband of Donna (Atherton) Sheehan Opalak.
Mr. Opalak was born October 6, 1933 in Waterbury, son of the late Michael and Anna (Pavlik) Opalak I. He was a graduate of Levenworth High School. He had worked in quality control and retired from Pratt and Whitney in 1994. John was a member of the Evergreen Club of Waterbury and a member of the Nativity Of The Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in which he also served on many committees. He will be remembered for his love of square dancing, bowling, playing cards, traveling, stamp collecting, helping on bingo night at the church and most of all, family gatherings.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters Shawn Moore of Suffield, Sandra Polacheck of Plantsville a step-daughter Kathleen Sheehan-Dugan of Alaska, two stepsons, Peter Sheehan of Wolcott, Mark Sheehan of Waterbury, a brother Michael Opalak II of Georgia, a sister Mary Opalak of Waterbury, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Olga Scholan.
Arrangements: A funeral service will be held Monday, January 4th, directly at the Nativity Of The Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox Church at 10:00 A.M. A burial will be held in the spring at the Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston. Calling Hours will be Sunday, January 3, from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street Thomaston.
