Mr. John F. (Jack) Torrence, Sr., 88, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at his home.He was the beloved husband of 53 years to his lovely bride Mary Ann (Kost) Torrence.
Jack was born in Thomaston on February 22, 1923 a son of the late Eugene and Mary Mamie (Harrigan) Torrence and was a lifelong resident He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired after 37 years with O & G Industries as a dispatcher Jack Hammer was an active Thomaston citizen. He served on the Democratic Town Committee; Thomaston Veterans Committee; Thomaston Beautification Committee and at one time was head of the Senior Housing Authority. Mr. Torrence was a long time member of the Clifford R. French Post #22 American Legion; Oakville VFW Post #7330; the Liederkranz Society; and was a life member of the Thomaston Fish and Game Club. He was also a communicant of St. Thomas Church.
Jack had a large and loving family, both immediate and adopted. He leaves his sons: John F. Torrence Jr. of New Haven and Joseph D. Torrence and his wife Karen of Howell, MI; and his daughters: Margaret Mary Rose and her husband Robert of Spotsylvania, VA; Mary Katherine Torrence of Malden, MA; and Julianne Torrence and her husband John Gold of Thomaston. "Boppa" also leaves his adoring grandchildren: Rachel, John (Jack), Jacob (Jake), Spencer, Luke, and Colin Torrence; and John and Emma Rose, as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Eugene and Robert Torrence.
The measure of a man is the magnitude of the lives he touched. Jack touched many lives, and will be greatly missed by both his family and all those who knew him.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 28th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, 19 Electric Ave., Thomaston. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Lyons Funeral Home, 42 High St.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Clifford R. French Post #22 American Legion in Jack Hammers name.
