Marie W. Galbraith
Former Executive Director of the Mattatuck Museum
Thomaston Ms. Marie W. Galbraith, 76, of Thomaston, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2022 at The Ivy of Watertown. She was the loving wife of Mr. Joseph Galbraith.
Marie was born on September 19, 1946 in Mt. Vernon, NY, daughter of the late Arthur and Hortense (Seldner) Winans. Marie was a longtime employee of the Mattatuck Museum, rising to the position of Executive Director. She served as Representative in the Connecticut General Assembly. Very active in her community, Marie was a member of the Thomaston Board of Education, Thomaston Board of Finance, Thomaston Opera House Commission, Thomaston Democratic Town Committee, and the Connecticut Council on the Humanities. As a founding member of the Waterbury chapter of the National Organization for Women, Marie was a tireless crusader for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.She enjoyed walking and bike riding in the Connecticut countryside and visiting museums.
Besides her husband of 55 years, Marie is survived by her daughter, Sarah Galbraith, three sisters, Virginia, Madeleine, and Rivka Winans; and brother Joseph Winans; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022 from 11:00 A.M. to Noon at Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street, Thomaston. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston.
