Thomaston- Mr. Armand V. DeFiore, 86, died Monday, December 5, at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Lydia (Zolla) DeFiore.
Armand was born October 15, 1925 in Thomaston son of the late Carmine and Maria (DiNunzio) DeFiore. He was a life long resident of Thomaston and had attended local schools and was a graduate of Thomaston High School. Following high school he had served honorably in the United States Navy in the North Atlantic as a seaman first class, from February of 1944 until May of 1946. He received the American Theater Medal, the European Theater Medal and the Victory Medal.
Armand had been employed as a tool and die setter and as a Thomaston Auxiliary Policeman. In 1963 he purchased Andersons Restaurant and renamed it Vi-Arms Restaurant. He owned Vi-Arms for forty three years and was also a co-owner of the Serendipity Restaurant on South Main St. in Waterbury.
An active member of the community, Armand was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Atlantic Council # 18, the Stag Club, the Italian American Club, the Liederkranz, a life member of the American Legion Clifford French Post # 22, the VFW, the Olympian Club, the Foresters, the East Lawn Country Club and was a member and former chairman of the Thomaston Democratic Town Committee.
Armand will be remembered for being instrumental in renaming the street in front of St. Thomas Church as Father McGivney Way, in memory of Father Michael J. McGivney founder of the Knights of Columbus and former Pastor of St. Thomas Church.
In addition to his wife of 58 years he is survived by three sons, Victor DeFiore of Thomaston, Stephen DeFiore of Thomaston and Carmine DeFiore and his wife Maria of Northfield; three daughters, Catherine Russ and Rick Darm of Thomaston, Laura Ann DeFiore and Chip Quinn of Thomaston and Christine Guerrera and her husband John of Northfield; nine grandchildren, David and Brian Russ, Michael, Daniel and Kathryn DeFiore, Casie, Nicholas and Alexa Guerrera and Olivia DeFiore; one great grandson, Ricky; several nieces and nephews and his faithful companion Yodi.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center and the Waterbury VNA Hope Team for the care and love given to Armand during his illness.
Arrangements: A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 10, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Thomaston. Calling hours are Friday, December 9, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston.
