Obituary

Thomaston - George E. McAdam, 90, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 31, He was the husband for 65 years of Madelyn (Carr) McAdam. He was born to the late Edgar and Elizabeth (Kovacs) McAdam on February 28, 1924 in Torrington, CT. George proudly served his country in World War II as a U.S. Navy Aviation Machinists Mate Third Class. He was assigned to a carrier group and served as a rear gunner on a Douglas dive bomber in the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. When WWII ended, he was assigned to Johnston Island in the Pacific where he did Air Sea Rescue for a year. He was awarded four service medals and two Purple Hearts. In May 2010, George and several other Thomaston veterans were chosen by Susan Bysiewicz to visit Washington D.C. as part of the American Warrior program. He worked at Penfield Saw, Block Island Light & Power, Cold Forming and Drawn Metal Tube in Thomaston until his retirement in 1989. He was also a former Thomaston Police supernumerary and member of the Thomaston ambulance service in the 1950s George was an active member of Thomaston American Legion, Post 22 and was Teamsters Union Local 677 retiree. He was one of the original Light Up the Town "Bracket Boys" who initially hung the Christmas lights in town. He was also a member of Thomaston United Church of Christ. He enjoyed many trips with his beloved Madelyn to Europe, the Caribbean and most recently trips to Isla Mujeres, Mexico with the "gang." George is survived by two children: Claudia Laxar and her husband Kevin of Stonington, CT and Brian McAdam and his wife, Maryann Sandford of Thomaston, CT. He is also survived by two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Virginia (McAdam) Manning and his brother John "Buddy" McAdam. The best portion of a good mans life: his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and love. -William Wordsworth Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 3, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston. A graveside service, followed by full military honors, will be held on Friday, April 4, at 11:30 A.M. at the Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Georges name to the Thomaston Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 237 South Main St., Thomaston, CT
