Charlottesville, VA - Mr. James Leroy Skilton, 88, formerly of Morris, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 16, 2016. He was the husband of the late Verla May (Swanson) Skilton.
Mr. Skilton was born June 12, 1928 to the late Halsey White Skilton, Sr. and Henrietta Frances Cook Skilton in Waterbury, Connecticut. He attended school in Block Island, RI and graduated from James Morris High School in Morris. He then finished his education at the Universities of Connecticut and California. He had served honorably in the United States Army. Moving to Washington, DC and then northern Virginia, he worked for the Bureau of Public Roads, later the Federal Highway Administration.
He married Verla May Swanson of Orleans, Nebraska on June 25, 1975. He retired in 1990 and they moved to Charlottesville, VA in 1996. Born again on June 13, 1964, he was a member of Barcroft Bible Church in Fairfax, VA and Alliance Bible Church and later Crossroads Community Church in Charlottesville.
In addition to his wife, Verla, he was predeceased by his sister Sylvia Agnes Woodward and his brother, Halsey White Skilton, Jr. He is survived by his brothers, Douglas Ellsworth Skilton and Louis Albert Skilton of Morris and his sister, Mary Margaret Barker of Bantam.
Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 24, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High Street in Thomaston. A funeral service will be on Monday at11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in East Morris Cemetery.
