Thomaston- Mr. John W. Nygren, Sr, died Wednesday, October 24, at the Pines at Bristol. He was the husband of the late Lois (Coy) Nygren.
John was born August 15, 1934 in Waterbury, son of the late Irving W. and Mae Eleanor (Twelves) Nygren. Raised in Thomaston he attended local schools and was a graduate of Thomaston High School where he was an all-star basketball player. Always considered a fine athlete, John was invited to try out for and was designated a first baseman for the New York Giants. He had been employed at the Seth Thomas Clock Co. for 12 years and retired from R & R Corrugated after 20 years in sales. He had served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Clifford French Post 22 in Thomaston, was a member of the Thomaston Fish and Game Club and a lifelong honorary member of the Thomaston Volunteer Fire Dept.
He is survived by one son, John "Jay" Nygren, Jr; three step sons; his brother Irving "Butch" Nygren of Bristol and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Melissa Otiz.
Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 16, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 P.M.
