Obituary

Fort Pierce, FL- Mr. John W. Pettit, 65, formerly of Thomaston, died Thursday, October 27, in Florida. He was the husband of Joyce (Bradshaw) Pettit. Mr. Pettit was born May 21, 1946 in New Haven son of the late John Pettit and Maureen (Fitzpatrick) Pettit Ruselowski. John worked for the United States Postal Service in the Waterbury and later in the Prospect offices for over 30 years before happily retiring in 2009. He worked hard for everything he got. John greeted everyone with a smile, a hug or a kiss and took credit for just about every meal that his beloved wife Joyce cooked. John had many loves; he was a voracious reader, whose interests spanned form To Kill a Mockingbird to Charles Dickens to Helter Skelter. He loved being Irish and everything that went along with it. He was a die hard fan of the New York Yankees, UConn Huskies and Bethlehem Plowboys. He loved the beach and vacationing and took trips to Old Saybrook, the Dominican Republic and Ireland. He was an intelligent man with a great sense of humor, he loved a good party. His hard work recently paid off when he and his wife were able to realize a lifelong dream and buy a winter home in Fort Pierce, Florida. He called it paradise, "Whats not to like," he would say. John was a Luddite, but that didnt stop him from setting up a Skype account so he could see his grandchildren every Sunday morning on the computer. He talked on the telephone with his grandkids for an hour and a half on the night of his passing, telling each and every one of them how much he loved them. John was a devoted family man who served as a role model to his three sons. He considered his daughter-in-laws the girls he never had. A devout Catholic John thanked God for his family and his wife whom he said gave him everything that was good in his life. John passed before seeing the permanent house he and Joyce were building in Florida reach completion. The doctors said he had an "enormous heart," which is something those who loved him already knew. In addition to his wife of 42 years he is survived by his three sons, John Pettit and his wife Patricia (Walsh) of Southington, Kevin C. Pettit of Thomaston and Zachary M. Pettit and his wife Jessica (Poulin) of Oakville; his sister, Robin (Ruselowski) Caouette of Oakville; three grandchildren, Emelia Maureen, Gavin William and Collin Jude Pettit and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Pettit. Arrangements: A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, November 3, at St. Thomas Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, November 2, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston.
