Obituary

Thomaston- Mrs. Dorothea A. (Wood) Westby, 90, died Wednesday evening, November 20, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. She was the widow of H. Norman Westby. Dorothy was born June 23, 1923 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Frederick John and Mae (Mott) Wood. She was graduated from Thomaston High School in 1941 and obtained an Associate Degree in secretarial studies from Katherine Gibbs College, graduating with distinction. During WWII she worked at the Pentagon for the Federal Government. In 1944 she met her future husband, H. Norman Westby. They were married on October 13, 1945 after the war. In the late 40s and the 50s and 60s she owned Woods Dairy Bar on South Main Street, a popular restaurant in Thomaston for over 25 years. In addition to owning a restaurant, she worked as a secretary for the Thomaston School system for five years and a bookkeeper for the K-Mart Corporation in the 70s and 80s. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Thomaston and the Thomaston Womens Club for over 50 years and an active volunteer at the Thomaston Red Cross Blood Drive. She is predeceased by her brother, P.O.W. WWII Floyd E. Wood. Dorothy is survived by one daughter, Claudia Westby Duff and her husband David Duff, of Westwood, MA, two sons: Kie Westby and his wife Laura of Southbury and Donald Westby and his wife Janice of Thomaston; eight grandchildren, Georgina Duff, Christina Duff, David Duff, Jr, ;Sarah Westby, Rachel Westby, Tonya Westby, Candice Mingel, Kimberly Westby, and three great-grandchildren, Michael Martin, Derek Martin and Alexis Mingel; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She leaves one sister- and brother in law, Nathalie and Roy Carlsted of St. Paul, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 28, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Congregational Church of Thomaston. Burial will be private. Arrangements are in the care of the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St.
