Thomaston- Mrs. Grace (Nelson) Anderson, 101, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, at Litchfield Woods in Torrington. She was the widow of George Eugene Anderson. They were married in 1940 and enjoyed life together for fifty three years.
Grace was born October 4, 1913 in Thomaston, daughter of the late Per Theodore and Sofia (Carlson) Nelson. She was a graduate of Thomaston High School class of 1930. Grace was a member of the first Girl Scout Troop organized in Thomaston under the leadership of the late Mildred Blakeslee Innes. In 1930 she worked as a model for the late Mrs. Frederick S. Chase, a well-known artist, of Waterbury. She was a fifty year employee of the J.H. Whittemore Company in Naugatuck and Middlebury.
Grace was a life member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Thomaston where she served as church registrar for nine years and served for twenty three years as treasurer of the Lutheran Church Women. Bethlehem Lutheran Church is now merged into Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Active in the community, Grace received recognition for serving twenty years as an American Red Cross blood drive volunteer. She also volunteered for the American Cancer Society and was a member of the Thomaston Senior Citizens, the AARP, the Evergreen Club and the Plymouth Grange # 72.
Grace was proud her of her Swedish heritage and was a member of the Gota Lejon - Ingeborg Lodge # 19, Vasa Order of America in Waterbury, which later merged with Vasa Karl the 12th Lodge 103 in Bristol. She served as Past District Master, Past District Secretary and Past District Treasurer of the Connecticut Lodge, Vasa Order of America. In 1971 she was made an honorary life member of the local lodge for outstanding work in all areas of Vasa.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, grand-nieces and grand nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Carl T. and John O. Nelson and sisters, Hilma Steadman, Linnea Johnson and Doris Wilson.
Arrangements: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 11:00 A.M. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Thomaston. Private committal services were held in the Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Lyons Funeral Home of Thomaston.
