Thomaston - Helen T. (Tanski) Kohanski, 94, lifelong resident of Thomaston, passed away on Monday evening, September 19, 2016 at her home after a brief illness. She was the widow of Mr. Myron W. Kohanski.
Helen was born on March 12, 1922 in Thomaston, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Lysakowski) Tanski. She graduated from Thomaston High School, Class of 1940 and was renowned for her consistent citizenship awards (D.A.R.) and her prowess on the basketball court. As Captain of the Girls Team, she had an all time score of 32 points in one game, rarely accomplished at that time. She was very proud of that record. Helen raised her family in Thomaston, worked in Thomaston, was an active member of St. Thomas Church, and in later years was a member of the Thomaston Beautification Committee. She was an early contributor to the Thomaston Public Library and a lifelong avid reader. Helen always told her family that she traveled the world through books and she passed on that love of knowledge to her daughters.
Helen is survived and beloved by her daughter Marion Urban and husband James of Southington, CT, her daughter, Cynthia McDermott and husband Myles of Bethlehem, CT, and daughter Constance Johnson of Durham, NC. She also leaves her grandchildren (Jennifer Castleberry, Charles E. LeSan III, Mira Lea McDermott, and Laura Wertz) and her great grandchildren (Jesse Chapman, Heather and Chelsey LeSan). She is also survived by her sister Henrietta Krulikowski and brother, Stanley Tanski and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Irwin Tanski.
Family and friends may call on Monday, September 26, 2016 from 8:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High St., Thomaston. A funeral service will be held at11:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church, 1 East Main St., Thomaston. Burial will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery in Bristol.
