Obituary

Thomaston - Helen M. (Babinetz) Masopust, 95, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, after a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Masopust, in 1994. Born in New York City on April 2, 1916, she was one of six children of the late Rudolph and Katherine (Oplustil) Babinetz. At age 2 she moved to Southington, Connecticut and later graduated from Southington High School. She married T. Sergeant Bernard Masopust USMC in 1944 and spent their first year in Cherry Point, North Carolina. After World War II they moved to Plymouth, CT and then, in 1952, made their home in her beloved adopted town of Thomaston. She was a communicant and active parishioner of St. Thomas Church and participated as a reader up to the time of her illness. She received the Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation award in 2005 and was active in the Legion of Mary. Prior to her husbands death they traveled widely to China, Europe, South America and parts of the U.S. She was a co-founder of The Childrens Discovery Center (Preschool) of Thomaston, and later worked and thrived as a teachers assistant in the Black Rock Elementary School. She was also a 50 plus year donor and volunteer with the American Red Cross, member of the Thomaston Womans Club, The Thomaston Opera House, Reading for the Blind and sponsored a Bible Study group. She truly treasured and appreciated those with whom she volunteered and worked and all of her "Angels." Helen touched the hearts of everyone she met with her warmth, love of life, God and family. She is survived by her five children: David Masopust and his wife Patricia, of Windham Center, CT, Dr. William Masopust and his wife Marilyn, of Woodstock, CT, Catherine Ryan and her husband Terrence, of St. Marys, GA, Daniel Masopust and his wife Gloria, of E. Morris, CT and Ann Marie Hyres and her husband Charles, of Torrington, CT. She was also a wonderful and inspiring grandmother to 14 grand and 3 great grandchildren. Arrangements: Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church in Thomaston. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. Calling hours are Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston. F In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the local VNA or a charity of the donors choice.
