Karen Elizabeth Frazine (ne Gilbert, formerly Sullivan) passed away unexpectedly on the afternoon of Friday, April 4, 2025. She was 65 years old.
Karen had just completed a full day of teaching and was walking to her car when she suddenly fell ill. She was taken by ambulance and suffered a fatal heart attack on the way to the hospital.
Karen was born on October 10, 1959, in Camden, New Jersey. She was the second of four children and the only daughter of Steve and Joan Gilbert. She was raised in Irondequoit, New York, and moved to Lubbock, Texas, in 1983 with Randy Sullivan, who would become her first husband.
In 1986, they returned to the Rochester, NY area, where Karen completed her MS in Education at Nazareth College in August of 1989. The couple settled in Hemlock, NY, where Karen worked as an art teacher until the birth of her only child, Wyatt Sullivan, in 1996. After separating from her husband in 2004, Karen returned to teaching and also took on the role of caretaker for her mother, whom she cared for until her passing in 2017.
Karen met her second husband, Richard Frazine, in 2011. They married on April 21, 2014, at Our Lady of Victory Church in Rochester, NY, and later made their home together in Thomaston, Connecticut, where they lived until her passing.
At the time of her death, Karen was teaching art at the Arch Bridge School in Bethlehem, CT. Karen had an unwavering devotion to her family and to God. She converted to Catholicism in the early 2000s and remained a devout Catholic for the rest of her life. She and Richard were members of St. Patrick Oratory in Waterbury, Connecticut, where she found spiritual community and joy.
Karen cared deeply for those around hershe was a quiet source of compassion and strength, often spending hours each evening in prayer for others. Her kindness, creativity, and faith touched everyone who knew her.
Karen is survived by her son, Wyatt Sullivan; her husband, Richard Frazine; her three brothers, Stephen, Bryan, and David Gilbert; fourteen nieces and nephews: Melissa Goddeau, James, Laura, Tyler, Nicholas, Jonathan, Daniel, and Zeke Gilbert, Nolan and Nathan Sullivan, Michael and Megan Pepe, Tommy Cangelosi, and Carly Downs; and six great-nieces and nephews, Ian, Connor, Kyle, Mason, Violet, and Caroline. She is also survived by her former husband, Randall Sullivan; her stepchildren, Charlie Frazine and Elizabeth Roger; her step-grandchildren, Katie, Bella, and Jade; and her step-great-grandchild, Sofia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Joan Gilbert.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street, Thomaston. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, April 12, at St. Patrick Oratory, 50 Charles Street, Waterbury, CT. Please meet directly at church. Burial will follow.
