Obituary

Marian Conklin passed away peacefully on March 15th, 2025 with her daughters by her side. Two weeks earlier, she had a joyous 100th birthday celebration with her family. Marian Elizabeth Wight was born March 1, 1925 and grew up in Thomaston, CT. She was the daughter of Anna Ebert Wight and Winfield Emmons Wight, M.D. She graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, ME and Simmons College in Boston, MA. Marian married John Upton Jr., of Norfolk, VA and raised their children in Watertown. She was a member of the Junior League of Waterbury, First Congregational Church of Watertown, Girls Scouts of America, and the Watertown Tennis Club. After their children were grown, she attended Quinnipiac College, received a degree in Nursing, and worked as a Registered Nurse at the Waterbury Hospital for several years. In 1975, Marian married Clifford T. Conklin, M.D. of Thomaston. She helped in his home office and provided after-school care for his grandchildren, Michael Garrity and Myra Grelo. In later years, she fostered and trained a number of German Shepherd puppies for the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. Marian enjoyed playing bridge, reading books, playing piano, singing in the church choir, ringing handbells, making new acquaintances, and sitting by a lake with a book in one hand and a sandwich in the other. As a Pisces, she enjoyed traveling and vacationing by water, whether it be a lake or the ocean. She was always ready for a new experience and a new adventure. Marian was predeceased by her son, John Winfield Upton, her husband, John Upton, Jr., her brother, Winfield E. Wight, Jr. and his wife Laura Brooks Wight, her husband Clifford Conklin, and her niece Margaret White Moore. She is survived by her daughters Carol Upton Crain, Jane Upton (Schmookler), Nancy Upton (Cole), grandson Morwin Schmookler, and nieces Linda Wight Mazur, Leslie Wight Route, Laurie Wight Gray, Leigh Anna Wight Reichenbach, and nephew Edward L. White, Jr. A private burial will be held in May at Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston. Memorial contributions may be made to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, online at www.fidelco.org or at 103 Vision Way, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
