Obituary

Thomaston - Mr. Roland A. Viets, 88, passed away on Thursday, December 31, at his home. He was the husband of the late Joan (Keefe) Viets. Roland was born April 19, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Elwin and Phoebe (Hildenbrand) Viets. Raised in Thomaston he had attended local schools and was a graduate of Thomaston High School. He had retired from Plume and Atwood after 32 years working as a carpenter and millwright. An avid square dancer for most of his life, he met his future wife Joan, at a square dancing class in Waterbury. He was a member of the Thomaston T-Squares and the Litchfield Square Dance Club. Roland and his wife Joan danced together for 57 years. He will be remembered for his love of carpentry and being an all-around "jack of all trades". He enjoyed making furniture for his family and bowling. Within the last year he had traveled to California and Mexico to attend the weddings of his grandchildren. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. He is survived by three sons, Paul Viets and his wife Tanya of Enfield, Brian Viets and his wife Sharon of Harwinton and David Viets and his wife Debra of New Hartford; three daughters, Maureen Laplante and her husband John of Thomaston, Diane Viets of New London and Sarah Viets and her husband Michael Pizzoferrato of Burlington; his grandchildren, Eric Laplante, Aimee Kerr, Tyler Kozaczuk, Amanda Mercier, Kaylee Viets, Lindsey Viets, Carter Viets, Derek Viets, Julia and Maya Pizzoferrato and Lauren and Rachel Viets; two great-grandchildren, Nathan Kozaczuk and Audrey Kerr; brother-in-law Daniel Keefe and his wife Ellen, sisters-in-law Alice Bertola and her husband Andrew, and Sister Maureen Keefe, R.S.M. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Viets and Paul Viets. The family would like to offer a special thanks to his caregiver, Gina King, for her care and compassion. Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 3, from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High St. Thomaston. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to VNA Northwest 607 Bantam Rd. Unit F. Bantam, CT 06750.
