Ode to Steven Foss
We mournfully announce the passing of Steven James Foss, 61, of Thomaston, CT. After a hard fought battle with glioblastoma brain cancer he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 29th just before midnight at the VITAS Inpatient unit at St. Marys Hospital.
Steven, the fourth child of five, born to Maureen Quigley Foss and Philip Everett Foss, took his first breath on January 23, 1962 in the bustling city of Hartford, CT.
Steven was a force to be reckoned with from the get go, he was known in grade school as the fastest runner in his grade and joined the football team in middle school. As a child, Steven loved tinkering with anything with a motor, such as his dirt bike and his many fixer upper cars. Whether it was revving an engine, humming a made-up tune, cracking a joke, or drumming with the tools in hands, family remembered him for making noise. This is a habit he surely took into adulthood!
After Steven graduated from Southington High School in 1980, he pursued mechanics certificates. He worked in various garages for 11 years. He always was passionate about cars, however, in 1994, he attended Porter and Chester and earned his journeymans license. He then apprenticed with his father, earned his E1 license and took over his fathers electrical business in 1996. Steven worked as an electrician for 22 years and every contractor, customer and friend knew him to be a skilled, accommodating, trustworthy electrician who was always their first call.
While riding on the highway to a job with his dad, he saw his high school sweetheart and would-be wife and made plans that day to see her which rekindled their relationship. When he first met his wife Kim Nardi at Southington High School in 1980 they were an "unlikely match". As it turns out though, Stevens wit and humor were a perfect match with hers! They dated for 8 years and though they talked about marriage, they needed 5 years apart to grow. After reuniting in 1994, he married her in August, 1998. Steven and Kim went on numerous adventures before settling in Thomaston to have 2 children, Kaelyn Rae Foss and Connor James Foss. Steven was VERY proud of his children's accomplishments. His love for them was apparent.
Steven always tried to find the funny or be the funny. He was creative with his jokes and made people feel comfortable. He had an affinity for the absurd and loved pictures of fat creatures like cats and marmots and doodling pictures of expressive suns and other oddities. His daughter, Kaelyn, and he spent much of their time together laughing about all sorts of offbeat topics and she certainly inherited his creative talents and sense of humor. With his son, he spent hours talking about car specs, watching automotive repair videos, and teaching him how to repair and restore his 1972 Chevy Truck. He loved cool cars and could rattle off the make and model and years of cars at a glance. He was proud of how easily his son caught on and had his dads mechanical ability, he and Connor could fix anything. Almost as great as his love for laughter and cars was his love for sweets which his brother-in-law Ronald continuously fed by deliveries of Jelly Bellys, Twinkies, Twizzlers and Ring Dings!
Steven was ALWAYS called on to help friends and family in any type of need day or night, unless it involved needles! He helped put in docks at his father-in-law's lake house, checked on neighbors houses and kids, as well as shared his tools and wealth of knowledge. He was generous with his time and attention and would stop what he was doing to pay attention to people around him. Steven was a great father, husband, brother and friend and was surprised at how many people showed him kindnesses when he fell ill. He was humbled by everyones love, but that should not have been the case, he was easy to love.
In addition to his wife Kim Nardi Foss and children Kaelyn Rae Foss and Connor James Foss, he is survived by his father Philip E. Foss, his brother Philip J. Foss and his wife Livia, his sisters, Patricia Gibson and her husband James, Sheila Swanson and her husband Craig and Elizabeth Godston and her husband Greg. He has many nieces and nephews. Steven was predeceased by his mother Maureen (Quigley) Foss.
