Bristol Mr. Steven Richard Johnston, 61, passed away on Sunday, November 26, at his home.
Steven was born May 25, 1962, in Waterbury, son of David P. and Eunice (McBride) Johnston of Cheshire. Raised in Thomaston, he graduated from Thomaston High School, class of 1981. He served 34 years as an active volunteer firefighter at Thomaston Fire Department and remained an honorary member until his passing. This is also where he earned his signature nickname "Wingnut."
Steves first job was at the Waterbury Republican-American picking up news stories from various bureaus, which later turned into taking photos and creating graphics.
Steves greatest joys were the Miami Dolphins, TFDs Engines 6 and 10, photography, traveling to Maine, his cat Tyler and dog Elsa, and spending time with his grandkids.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fianc Lisa Smead with whom he lived; his brother, Bruce Johnston and his wife Hana of Bradenton, FL and his children Mike (Mikala), Nic, and Alicia and grandchildren Brooks, Quinn and Andie; his sister, Laurie Johnston Goldreich of East Lyme and her children Zach, Hannah and Liv; his stepson, Andrew Smead of Seymour and his children Aiden, Mason, Madalina and Nora who knew him as "Poppa Steve."
Calling hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 4 at Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street in Thomaston. A funeral service will begin immediately following calling hours. Internment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston.
