Thomaston – Dora May (Hirleman) Carey passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 in Torrington. She was the widow of Melvin F. Carey who died on October 6, 1992.
Dora was born in Berwick, PA on October 5, 1923, daughter of the late Jay and Mary (Jumper) Hirleman. Her family moved to Oakville, CT in July of 1928 and to Thomaston in October of 1943. Dora graduated from South School in Oakville in 1938 and from Watertown High School in 1942. She worked at Tech Systems for 32 years. Dora was a member of the Eagle Rock Church since 1954 having joined on a letter of transfer from the Union Congregational Church in Oakville. She was active in the church where she served as trustee, deacon, and treasurer.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Yost of Salem, SC, and Sharon Neale (Norman) of Guyton, Georgia; five grandchildren, John, Dora, and Jerry Comstock, and Michael and Russell Neale; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special person, her niece and caretaker, Joan Lumbard Knox who she thought of as a third daughter. She was predeceased by an infant son, Melvin Jay; two brothers Thomas and Robert Hirleman; and two sisters, Kathryn Lumbard Carey and Betty Comstock
Family and friends may call on Saturday, March 17 from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High St., Thomaston. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Burial will be held in the spring in Hillside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Dora’s name to the Thomaston Volunteer Ambulance Corp., 237 South Main St, Thomaston, CT 06787

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 2:30 P.M. at Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston.
