Morris – Douglas E. Skilton, 87, of Morris, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017 at his home. He was the loving husband of 58 years of Margaret C. Skilton.
Douglas was born on February 8, 1930 in Waterbury, son of the late Halsey W. and Henrietta (Cook) Skilton. He spent many childhood years on Block Island, and then graduated from Oliver Wolcott Technical School, Torrington, CT. Douglas was a gifted woodworker and enjoyed carving animals for carousels. He also loved gardening, tending to his vegetables, and stonewalls. He was a two time member of the Morris Fire Department and a longtime member of the Morris Historical Society and the American Chestnut Society. Douglas also served honorably and proudly in the United States Army, 169th Infantry, stationed in Switzerland and Germany.
Besides his wife Margaret, Douglas is survived by his two children, Joel D. Skilton and his wife Liesl, and Jennifer Skilton of Morris; two grandchildren, Colby and Eli Skilton; his brother Louis Skilton of Morris; his sister Mary Barker and her husband Otto of Bantam; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Sylvia Woodward; and two brothers James L. Skilton and Halsey W. Skilton Jr.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High St., Thomaston. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will be held in the Spring in East Morris Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Morris Volunteer Fire Dept or Morris Historical Society.
