Thomaston – Mrs. Evelyn (Mitchell) Hyland, 92, passed away at her home on Tuesday evening, November 14 after a brief illness. She was the widow of John (Jack) M. Hyland, Sr.
Evelyn was born April 24, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of the late Alan H. and Marguerite (Johnston) Mitchell. Raised in Brooklyn she moved to Connecticut after her marriage to Jack, whom she met at a USO dance. She had been employed at St. Mary’s Hospital for many years as a unit clerk, until her retirement. In 1971, Evelyn was a counselor for the Junior Achievement program. Evelyn was co-founder and director of the Thomaston Drum Corp. She had been active in the Torrington Senior Center.
Evelyn is survived by four sons, William Hyland and his significant other Diana of Torrington, John Hyland and his wife Donna of Waterbury, Robert Hyland and his wife Lisa of Naugatuck and David Hyland and his wife Lorry of Bristol; one daughter, Nancy Galpin and her husband Robert of Thomaston; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and several nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her son, James Hyland.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, at 12:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
