Southbury – Miss Joan L. Chernauskas, 85, died on Wednesday, September 1, at her home following a long illness.

Joan was born in Waterbury on September 26, 1935, daughter of the late Joseph J. and Mary (Mikeltonas) Chernauskas. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Grammar School, where she was a member of drum corps, Crosby High School, the University of Connecticut and the University of Hartford.

Joan began her teaching career in Plymouth, then joined the faculty at Mitchell School in Woodbury. After retirement Joan worked for the Pomperaug Health District and as a tutor at Nonnewaug High School.

Joan loved to shop, play tennis and golf and root for the Knicks.

She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Harlow of Thomaston; her niece, Laurie Mann and her husband Eric of Pittsford, NY; her nephews, Mark Chernauskas and his wife Margaret and their daughters, Tess and Ella of Bronx, NY and Garrett Harlow and his wife Kara and their children, Hayden, Anne and Grant of Goshen. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara Chernauskas and several cousins In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Joseph T. Chernauskas and her brother-in-law, Douglas Harlow.

Joan’s family would like to thank her devoted care givers, Vera, Jasmin and Carneta.
