Thomaston – Joel Edmund Nelson (Ed), 96, passed away at his home on March 21, 2021. He was the son of Joel and Signe Nelson. Ed was a life-long member of the Covenant Church and very proud of his Swedish heritage.

Edmund was a graduate of Thomaston High School. He served in the Army during WWII and worked at the Seth Thomas Clock Co. before continuing his education. Ed received an Associate’s degree from North Park College, a BS degree from Augustana University, a Master’s degree from Central CT University and a Sixth Year Certificate from the University of Connecticut.

Ed began his successful career in education as a teacher in Woodbury, CT. He later became a principal in Bristol, CT retiring in 1987. After retirement, he joined the staff of the University of New Haven supervising beginning teachers.

Ed was devoted to his family and was very proud of each of them. Surviving Ed are his wife of nearly 62 years, Alice; sons, Joel, and his wife Victoria, of Norfolk; and Erik, of Greenwich; daughters, Lisa, of Woodbury; and Tina, of Thomaston; grandchildren, Westley, Gabriell, Marcela, and Avery Nelson, Troy and Tess Muckle; great grandson, Jaxon Muckle and his mother, Myranda Dionne. Surviving Ed also are his brother in law, Robert Roffey, and his wife, Roslyn; his sister in law, Rebecca Nelson; several nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Stanley Hurlbert.

Edmund was predeceased by his grandson, Kyle Muckle, his sisters, Elsie Eckert and Grace Dayton; and his brother, Arthur.

Edmund was very proud of being the recipient of a Purple Heart for wounds sustained at the Anzio beachhead during WWII. He was the recipient of several other medals including the Bronze Star.

Ed was a gentle, quiet man respected by all who knew him. He appreciated the prayers, cards, and visits during the last years of his life.

Graveside services will be private later in the spring.
