Thomaston – Mr. Raymond E. Axelby, 94, passed away on Friday, November 8, at his home. He was the husband of the late Shirley (Lattimer) Axelby and Vera (Hall) Lumpkin Axelby.
Raymond was born February 15, 1925 in Plymouth, son of the late Raymond and Minnie Axelby. He was graduate of Terryville High School and went on to serve as a radioman in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War. After the war he was employed at the Seth Thomas Clock Company as a tool and die maker before transferring to Stromberg where he worked as a Process Engineer and eventually General Foreman. He had also worked for Stone Container and Holm Corrugated as a designer.
He enjoyed watching sports, particularly UCONN Husky Basketball. An avid golfer, he played into his 80’s
He is survived by his son, David R. Axelby and his wife Patti of Fishkill, NY; two sisters, Frances Rothe and Betty White, both of Thomaston; one step-son Richard Lumpkin and his wife Gail of South Windsor; one step-daughter, Ann Savastio of Plymouth; two step-grandchildren, Lauren (Savastio) Ayr and her husband Timothy of Clinton and Matthew Savastio of Farmington and one step great-granddaughter, Iris Ayr of Clinton
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 14, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Lyons Funeral Home 46 High St. Thomaston followed by a funeral service at 6:00 P.M. Burial in Northfield Cemetery will be private.
