Keene, New Hampshire - Lucille (Crehan) Mahar, 90, of 56 Douglas St., Keene, NH, formerly of Thomaston, CT died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Langdon Place in Keene, NH surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.  

She was born in New York City, New York on February 20, 1924 to Austin and Helen (Gosson) Crehan and was the oldest of eight children.  She attended school in New York City and graduated from Julia Richman High School in 1941.

After high school she went to work for the bookseller Barnes and Noble but soon began a career at Bell Telephone Company as an operator and customer service representative. During World War II she was transferred by the phone company to Richmond, Virginia as part of the war effort.  She worked for the phone company in Scranton, Pennsylvania and in the early 1950s transferred to Southern New England Telephone Company in Connecticut.  She retired in 1980 with over 35 years of service. In addition to her many satisfying professional relationships, she was loved and admired by a wide circle of friends and family.  She was active in the Thomaston Woman’s Club and took pride in serving twice as President. Her sense of humor was legendary and it was not unusual to find her right in the middle of the fun.  

On September 11, 1948 she married Jerome Stanford Mahar of Scranton Pennsylvania and they were happily married for over 40 years until her husband’s death in 1992.  They raised their family in Thomaston, CT. Her first devotion was to her family. She helped with girl scouts, school projects, and after school activities.  She had a special appreciation of the holidays and created festive traditions happily carried on today by her children and their families.  She loved good food, was an excellent cook, and enjoyed entertaining.  She was a skilled bridge player and looked forward to her weekly bridge club.  She was a life-long and wide-ranging reader.  She loved to travel and especially enjoyed trips to the southwest, Martha’s Vineyard and made a memorable trip to Ireland in 1994. She took great pride and deep interest in her children’s accomplishments and achievements and was a great support at times of challenge. She relished the role of grandmother of 12 and succeeded in making each of her grandchildren feel especially loved and appreciated. She supported their educational and professional goals and was always deeply interested in their thoughts and ideas.  

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, cousin, and aunt.  She is survived by her four daughters Deborah Morris of Walpole, NH, Lisa Mahar and her husband Bill Beardslee of Keene, NH, Jennifer Samela and her husband Nick of Thomaston, CT and Melinda Feola-Mahar and her wife Alison of Keene, NH.  Her grandchildren Matthew Morris, Joshua Mahar, Lark Morris, Amber Fields and her husband Alvin, Luke Beardslee and his wife Jenny, Silas Beardslee, Ashleigh Giambra and her husband Thomas, Nicole Samela and her fiancĂ© Don Maselli, Taylor Samela, Michael Feola-Mahar, Jessica Feola-Mahar, and Frankie Feola-Mahar.  And great grandchildren Deja Fields, Daunte Fields, Dakota Fields, Dominic Fields, Aiden Fields, Peighton Giambra, and Braeden Lucille Beardslee.

Lucille is predeceased by her beloved brother Frank (Sonny) Crehan. She is also survived by her siblings Beverly Hedgedus of Pennsylvania, James Crehan of Tennessee, Mercedes Crehan Hall of Texas, Austin Crehan, Jr of Texas, Michael Crehan of Louisiana, and Emil Crehan of Louisiana.

The family is grateful to the staff of Langdon Place for their warmth, skill, and care over the past several months. A special thank you from the family to Lucille’s roommate Carol Artara for her care, concern, and friendship.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lyons Funeral Home in Thomaston, CT.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas Church on June 11, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
