Thomaston- Walter G. Robinson, 89, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017. He was the husband of the late Phyllis (Ingellis) Robinson.

Walter was born in Thomaston, CT, on October 18, 1928 to the late Robert and Ethel (Armstrong) Robinson. A lifelong resident of Thomaston, Walter attended local schools. He earned his BA in History at Fordham University, and his Master’s degree in Education at Central Connecticut State College. Walter proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, in the 40th Infantry Division during 1952-1953; the 981st Field Artillery Battalion; and as a Battery Officer in the 155mm Howitzer Battalion. He taught in Thomaston for 38 years, and the last 20 years was in charge of Thomaston High School History Department.

Before becoming a teacher in Thomaston, Walter did a brief stint in Connecticut’s legendary brass industry. During that time, he met his future wife, Phyllis Ingellis. Walter and Phyllis shared many happy years of travel, family get-togethers, classical music concerts, antiquing and crafts.

During his many years in Thomaston, Walter—along with Phyllis-- was an active volunteer for the Thomaston Historical Society, the Opera House, St. Thomas Church and the American Legion. As a well known amateur historian, Walter regularly wrote newspaper articles and pamphlets on local Thomaston history as well as Connecticut history. He also authored a two volume work entitled Connecticut Vignettes and Visits.

Walter is survived by his niece, Gayllis R.Ward, and her husband, Jim Clemence; his brother-in-law, Patrick Ingellis; his sister-in-law, Sandra Morse-Druhan; his brother-in-law, Bill Ingellis; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis Robinson, and his brother, Robert A. Robinson.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 8 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Church, 1 East Main Street, Thomaston. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery with full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Walter’s name to the Thomaston Opera House, 158 Main Street, Thomaston, CT 06787, or Thomaston Historical Society, 158 Main Street, Thomaston, CT 06787.
